How to Start a Side Hustle and Quit Your Day Job

Do you know that you can start a side hustle and be able to quit your day job in a matter of months? With unfettered access to the World Wide Web, unabated technological advancements, and by dint of determination to succeed, you’ve what it takes to be your own boss. But you must not downplay on the sacrifice on your path which will make things to work for you.

Although the internet presents and promises a lot of goodies in terms of making money online, I’ll not advise you to quit your day job from day one without starting a side hustle that guarantees your future income each and every month. With easy access to advanced internet technologies, anyone can start a side hustle while working from home and make money.

Starting a side hustle is not complicated if you’ve bankable or viable business ideas that solve pain points which your target audience will be willing to pay for. The best way to get started is to create, manage and own a platform where you can continue to interact with your ideal customers, demonstrate your expertise, and build credibility with them before selling any product or service they need.

An easy route is to create a blog with self-hosted content management system like WordPress, optimize it for SEO (search engine optimization) and AI (artificial intelligence), and consistently publish content as solutions which should be related to the topics and pain points of your target market.

As you know, there are broadly two ways to serve any market of your choice. The first way is to create a product that solves a challenge, problem, or fill a gap in the marketplace. This could be a physical or digital product.

The second way is to provide a service based on your skill set or expertise. You can do this as a freelancer or broker where you’ll be paid based on the agreed fee charged by you and accepted by your hirer. Examples of service-based solutions are being a freelance writer, graphic designer, or web developer.

It’s easy to start a side hustle business these ways and become highly successful than waiting for an auspicious but elusive moment to quit your day job and start your own business in a big way. For example, I was still holding down my day job when I started an affiliate marketing business some years back.

As soon as I understood the nuts and bolts of promoting and selling affiliate products and services on the internet and consistently earning commissions thereof, I diversified into domaining and website flipping. It was then I realized that the secrets to every online business success is hinged mainly on determination, consistency, and the willingness to learn.

Today, I may not be able to make money online to build skyscrapers all over the world, but I’ve been able to achieve financial freedom of my dreams by being self-employed. I work from home every day, and I decide when to sleep and wake up. It has also offered me the opportunity to pursue my spiritual lifestyle without any hindrances of any kind.

You must be able to allocate quality time to tend to your side hustles every week. You’ve to be religious about it. You’ve to show up in your internet business at least one hour a day. You’ve to study any online business model inside out which you want to start with. This is important so that you can quickly spot and avoid mistakes inimical to any business success.

At the barest minimum, you need to invest money to register a domain name, buy web hosting services, and set up an email marketing software to build an email list of subscribers. To make it easy for you to sell any product or service on the internet, you need people who know, like and trust you in any specific niche. So, list building is an integral part of every successful digital marketing system which you must not ignore for any reason.

I have written a step-by-step web hosting guide to help you sign up with HostGator with ease and get a free domain name from them to start your side hustle business seamlessly. With less than $200 as your out-of-pocket cash investment, you can start a blog and make money in any niche market of your passion in a matter of 90 days or less.

Creating digital products or services to sell, promoting affiliate products, blogging, freelancing, and so on, are some of the many ways to start side hustles and make money. While there is learning curve involved in all these models, it’s doable if you’re determined to succeed. Yes, anyone can learn it and make money on the internet!

When I was starting out, I told myself that I want to quit my 9 to 5 job within 365 days or less. To this end, I decided to write a business plan to guide me in every step of the way and everything I wanted to do.

Barring all unforeseen circumstances, I clearly spelt out all the details of what I want to do to quit my day job in record time, i.e. from business idea conception to creating a platform to monetize my content to online marketing strategies which I deployed, and so on.

If you don’t leave any stone unturned and you’re a stickler to details, there is no way you cannot make money online and quit your job sooner rather than later. As a digital publisher, you’ve what it takes to successfully build a small business from home without all the bells and whistles associated with brick-and-mortar world.

5 Tips for Starting a Successful Side Hustle

Do you know that starting a successful side hustle is not rocket science? Although there are many variables at play but what matters the most is the entrepreneurial spirit in you to succeed. Obviously, there are challenges and obstacles which you’ll face if you’re holding down a full-time day job and running a side hustle business concurrently; but the benefits that will accrue to you in terms of time and financial freedom are immeasurable in the long run.

I’m going to walk you through my top 5 tips and secrets which you’ve to consider if you hope to start a side hustle business and earn money online. You’ve to treat these points as sacrosanct if your goal is to solve problems and pain points in the marketplace while making money online as an entrepreneur.

Tip #1: Be an Expert on Something

Without mincing words, I want you to know that majority of people always want to identify with an expert to lead them on a topic they are interested in. Are you in personal development or personal finance niches? Then become a go-to expert in your niche and you’ll have followers, fans base or list members who will be interested in what you are doing.

The only time any group of people may remotely identify with a novice or newbie on any topic is when he is doing a case study that will benefit his followers as well. In this case, his followers may want to see the outcome of starting a business or anything similar and possibly learn from it.

Personally, I love business case studies because it teaches a lot about what to do and what not to succeed. My first major task before pursuing any specific niche market is to always work on my expertise status. I’ll immerse myself on the subject matter by reading books, taking online courses or enrolling in coaching programs related to my field.

The idea is to learn, know enough and be able to demonstrate reasonable knowledge on a topic above mediocrity which will invariably help me to shine as a thought leader who people will be willing to follow.

As soon as you conduct market research on your target topic to confirm the feasibility of your side hustle idea, your next step should be on how to become an expert on the topic which you’re interested in. The easiest way to get started is to create a blog around a niche and start publishing content for your target audience to engage with while digging deep by constant reading and learning.

By engaging with your blog readers, you’ll be able to draw patterns and conclusions from your interactions with them and their responses. And from the comments and questions they will be asking, you can gauge their expectations therefrom. It will also help you to know what topic ideas to focus on when writing blog posts. This will give you a sense of direction.

Tip #2: Build an Audience

Your target audience is the set of people who are continually interested in your topic and are willing to engage with you through your publications. If you don’t have a raving audience to bank on, it means you don’t have reliable and profitable niche market to start a side hustle business in the first place. Or you’ve not built an expert status strong enough to grab people’s attention in your target niche market.

Like I mentioned earlier, the best ways to build an audience around a topic is to start a blog and build an email list of subscribers. If you can get 100 subscribers on your list, you can be confident that you’ll be able to scale up over time. You cannot be an expert or authority on a subject without followers to toot your horn. This is why you cannot underrate this point if you’re striving to start a successful side hustle business.

Tip #3: Be Generous with Content

Starting a side hustle is mainly about solving pain points in the marketplace by providing solutions as applicable. There are many ways to use content in this regard. You can create videos, write ebooks, publish high-quality blog posts on a subject, and so on.

If you’re a side hustler, what is important to you is to make a compelling first impression before your readers cum solution seekers as the go-to guy or gal in your field. You may not be the very best but you’ve to be among the best in the target niche market. By being generous with superior and unique content, you can draw in your prospects and leads into your sales funnel and then take it up from there.

For example, if you’ve a premium side hustle guide on how to make money online, you can create a free ebook on this topic and give it away to your readers to download. In the free PDF ebook, you’ll have the best opportunity to include links to the landing page of a premium course you want to promote and sell to your target market.

As a matter of fact, there is nothing complicated about starting a successful side hustle if you’re an expert on a subject and you’re able to create content consistently to wow your readers, solve their pain points and also build credibility and trust with them.

You’re aware that people buy from who they know, like and trust. The only way for you to quickly achieve this goal is to engage with your audience through content as a proof of your worth on the subject matter before selling any product or service to them.

For a lot of niche markets, I’ve been able to neatly repackage pieces of content which I’ve already published online on a topic for free, add more value and then sell it for tidy sum of money. What I did was to add new content, subtopics and repackage it for its money’s worth.

Your prospects don’t really care about repackaged free content being sold to them if what you’re selling will solve their problems in one place instead of dissipating valuable time gleaning pieces of information here and there on the internet. Gone are the days when you can deceive your readers with incomplete information and coercing them to click a link to learn more.

Tip #4: Own an Online Platform

While it’s good to use Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc, to create online presence using a combination of SEO (search engine optimization) and social media marketing tactics, owning an online platform such as building a website or creating a blog is better. It will help you in personal branding drive as well as building credibility and trust with your target audience over time.

The smartest thing you can do is to create YouTube channel, post or publish content on LinkedIn or create a Facebook page and use these media to funnel targeted traffic to your blog for lead nurturing. This way, you’ll be able to control what happens in your business and not be at the mercy of third-party algorithms.

But you’ve to understand that creating an online platform of your own will involve time and money investments. Also, you’ve to develop digital skills to manage your website effectively. Otherwise, you’ll be spending lots of money to hire freelancers by outsourcing tasks which you cannot execute.

Tip #5: Create a System for Consistent Online Marketing

If you want to be top of mind to your target customers or clients, you’ve to integrate a system that will allow you to consistently promote your brand, product or service to your target audience through online marketing.

You can achieve this feat by using two-pronged strategies of blogging and content marketing.

You can also take it a step further by integrating automation tools such as email marketing software that will help you to build a list of highly targeted leads and customers. If you’ve been online for any length of time, you’ll agree with me that the World Wide Web is a marketplace of survival of the fittest.

And the only way you can really survive as an online business owner or entrepreneur is by being ahead of the crowd in thought leadership, digital marketing strategies, content marketing and email marketing.

Do you want to start a successful side hustle with ease and make money online. You can download my side hustle playbook for free to discover strategies, tactics, methods, secrets and tips to build an email list of subscribers, start a blog and make money. It’s a complete lowdown of what it takes to quit your day job, start a side hustle business and achieve financial freedom in record time.

The Best Way to Start a Side Hustle for Beginners

If you’re looking for the best way to start a side hustle for beginners on the internet, this blog post will help you immensely to hit the ground running. The best part is that you can work from home or anywhere in the world and still succeed by leaps and bounds.

But before you step your foot in the door, you’ve to understand that the following criteria are necessary for any side hustle business success. A lot of side hustlers get started with vim and vigor and give up sooner than they started when they are not earning quick cash in the process as expected.

Making money online from side hustles requires good business idea, consistency, patience and a desperate target niche to serve. To this end, you must not take a leap in the dark by starting a side business without researching a problem in the specific niche market which you’re going to target.

After finding a problem to solve, you’ve to take it a step further to validate if your target audience will be “willing and able” to pay for the solution you may recommend. The solution you’re going to proffer could be your own digital product or an affiliate product where you may earn affiliate commission from your marketing efforts.

For you to do this successfully, you may have to set up an email marketing campaign where you’ll build an email list of subscribers, build trust and credibility with your list members before pointing them to the solution that will help them to solve their problems.

Tip #1: Avoid Information Overload.

If you want to start a side hustle or any internet business for that matter, you must be laser focused on what you want to do. A lot of distractions abound online especially the so-called shining objects syndrome (SOS) which is all over the place and it will demand your attention and money. You should always remember that all that glitters is not gold on the web space.

You’ve to go with a side hustle that aligns with your passion, interest and experience and assiduously work with it until you succeed. On the World Wide Web, there is surfeit of advertisements for the next big things that can potently become a bane to your focus and achieving your business goal.

You’ve to start small and grow big slowly as you learn and earn in the process. When I was starting a blog with self-hosted WordPress CMS platform some years back, I didn’t know anything to bank on. But with determination and consistent practice, I’ve been able to create blogs and make money online in different niche markets solving problems for my target audience by regularly publishing high quality content as solutions around my target subject matter’s problems and pain points.

Tip #2: Take Consistent Action Towards Your Goal

I want you to know that you’ll surely make mistakes at the beginning of your side hustle career if you’re a complete beginner or newbie. That’s quite understandable! What is the most important is your ability to take consistent action towards your goal by providing valuable information to your target audience and making money on the internet through any of your preferred monetization models.

As you may already know, there are several steps to start an online business successfully which include registering a domain name, buying web hosting, building a website or creating a blog, optimizing your website for on-page SEO, creating and publishing content regularly, monetizing your website, driving targeted traffic to your website, setting up a list building software, just to name a few.

The above steps are very vital to your internet business success, and you must have a good grasp of them to excel in the end. So, you’ve to make sure you implement each of the above steps conscientiously, track your web activities with requisite online tracking tools and make improvements where necessary.

With that said, here is the best way to start a side hustle for beginners without breaking a sweat.

  1. Identify a skill or product you can provide on the internet.
  2. Research a target market that needs your skill or product.
  3. Build an audience around your skill or product.
  4. Monetize your skill or product.
  5. Track your progress and scale up.

Step #1: Identify a Skill or Product You Can Provide

To get started, you’ve to look inward and determine what type of skill or talent you possess to help others get better or solve their pain points. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel here. No! Your goal is to offer unique perspective into the service you wish to provide or product you hope to create and sell online.

For example, as a freelance writer for hire, I provide well-researched, high-quality and unique content for my clients at affordable rates which constantly propel them to give me more jobs to do. As it were, there are many freelance writers out there on the internet, but my unique freelance writing services has differentiated me from the crowd.

Even if you don’t have existing skill or knowledge to bank on right away, you can learn digital skills of your interest in a matter of weeks and be able to turn it to a side hustle business in no time. It’s not all about providing services with the skills you have; you also have the liberty to create a digital product or app to sell on the internet if you’ve the knowledge to execute it to a Tee.

Your major task is to identify a skill you have which a group of people will find valuable online and use it to fill a need or gap in the marketplace. For example, if you have high negotiation skills, you can become a highly paid web broker when you bring potential buyer and seller together to close deals in any niche market.

Step #2: Research a Target Market that Needs Your Skill

Until you’re able to discover a market for your product or service, it will be a futile exercise thinking of starting a side hustle business to make money on the internet. In addition, you need enough of these people in the marketplace who will need your service or product to make your time and money investments worthwhile.

You may have to conduct market research using several online tools available (both free and paid) to uncover potential needs and wants to attend to. You can also conduct online survey or use questionnaire to elicit information from your target niche. With a list building system in place, this will be quite easy for you to achieve.

Also, using the search features available in niche forums and questions and answers sites, you can easily tamp down and gauge the popularity of your topic or subject matter before taking a decision to pursue it as a side hustle.

Keyword research tools should not be excluded when conducting market research to discover pain points and problems to solve. Google Keyword Planner is free for Google Ads advertisers and you can start with it to test the waters.

Step #3: Build an Audience Around Your Skill or Product

It takes two to tangle in business i.e. you, the seller, and the buyer. No matter how talented you are in your chosen field or how stellar your product is, you cannot make money from it if no one is there to pay you for it.

And the greatest hurdles you’ll face with your target audience amongst others are trust and credibility. You’ve to work and earn it with time. You cannot do this overnight because people buy from who they know, like and trust which can only happen from constant contact, creating rapport, regular interaction and building relationship with your ideal audience.

This is why building an audience is critical to your side hustle business success. Having an audience to regularly interact with will create rapport with them i.e. your readers, followers, fans, leads, clients and customers. As a matter of fact, trust and relationship will create a level playing field for both the seller and buyer.

But before that, you must have something going for you to command their attention and respect such as your charisma, expertise or thought leadership, negotiation or marketing prowess, patience to answer questions, and so on. Any target audience worth the salt is not looking to mediocre but an expert in the industry to lead them in the way.

So, you’ve to do everything within your power to be an expert on a subject or topic that is of interest to a group of people who are ready to pay you when you provide a service or deliver the goods to them. If you’re not sure of your expert status as of now, you can enroll in a course, buy an ebook on a topic, download a video and learn from there.

The truth is that the be-all and end-all of online marketing is having a target audience that is willing to listen to what you have to say and take the requisite action as you’ll direct them to do. To this end, the best way to start a side hustle for beginners is to:

  1. Start a blog targeting an ideal audience in a specific niche market,
  2. Build a list of subscribers who can become a pool of potential customers in the foreseeable future,
  3. Regularly publish high quality content as solutions to burning questions in your target niche to demonstrate your expertise, and
  4. Monetize your content in any desirable business models acceptable to your industry or market.

Step #4: Monetize Your Skill or Product

Now that you have a target audience you can call your own, it’s time to monetize your skill or product. Let’s assume you own a blog focusing on personal finance. The next step is for you to consistently publish high quality content on the blog website on how to pay off debts, save and invest, and so forth.

As soon as you’re able to hit thousands of views per month, you can be rest assured that monetizing your blog will be a winner. You can monetize your blog with:

  • Contextual adverts such as Google AdSense, Mediavine, etc,
  • Affiliate links related to relevant products and services,
  • Sponsored posts,
  • Your own digital products such as ebook, video, etc.
  • App or software created by you,
  • And so on.

Step #5: Track Your Progress and Scale Up

Making more money on the internet is about smart work and not necessarily hard work alone. Your goal is to work less and earn more. And the best way to achieve this is by tracking your progress with online tools, analyzing it and scaling where possible.

Google Analytics and Google Search Console are good places to start because they are free to set up on your blog or website.

If you are a freelance writer for hire like me, you can integrate digital marketing services including SEO (search engine optimization) to your suites of offerings to scale up and boost your income.

Personally, the best way to start a side hustle for beginners is to create a blog and take it up from there. It doesn’t matter if you are providing online business services as a freelancer or creating digital products to sell. It’s from your blog website you can build an audience whom you can promote products and services to from time to time.

What is the Most Profitable Side Hustle Business to Start?

profitable side hustle business

A number of aspiring online entrepreneurs often ask the question, “What is the most profitable side hustle business to start?” In this blog article, I’ll answer the question and show you how to get started on a budget as well. You’re not going to break the bank to start your own business and make money on the internet.

As a matter of fact, with less than $50, you can start a side hustle business successfully which will earn you revenue in millions of dollars as quickly as possible. A lot of people underrate this business money spinner because they believe it’s the hardest to implement on a daily basis.

Let’s get to the basics!

What is the most profitable side hustle? The answer is simple and straightforward. It’s a side business you can do to solve specific problems for a target group of audience who are willing and able to pay for the solution. That is it; no more, no less!

And the larger your target audience and the more evergreen the niche is, the more money you’ll make over a long period of time. This is why certain niche markets will not go away any time soon in terms of making money such as business, investment, get out of debt, travel and tour, health and wellness, beauty and lifestyle, marriage and relationship, and so forth.

Your first task or assignment is to find out how you can become a problem solver or solution provider for your target audience in an area of your passion, interest or experience. After that, you’ll use a simple system and platform to deliver the goods to these desperate buyers who are looking for an expert to listen to.

With that said, let’s look at a typical example to drive home the point about what the most profitable side hustle business is. Like I said earlier, you can get started with less than $50 but it comes with a dose of hard work at the beginning.

The answer or solution is simply based on my personal experience which I’ve also collaborated with other successful online business owners. In fact, I got motivated based on what I saw other successful online entrepreneurs were doing to make money online, month after month without fail.

As I discovered, every entrepreneur who decides to use this system to create brand awareness for his business always get results through increased revenue and profits. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a freelance writer, content creator, web designer, virtual assistant, digital product creator, publisher, author, just name it. It works for everyone!

You can use this 6-step system to get started.

  1.  Decide on a side hustle business idea you want to start
  2. Identify problems in your target niche
  3. Make sure there is enough demand for your solution if you decide to create it
  4. Build a website as your business office or gateway to deliver the solution
  5. Use your website to promote your solution
  6. Make money online on the side

Now, I’m going to break it down and discuss each step in the above system for you to understand the nuts and bolts of how it works.

Step #1: Decide on a Side Hustle Business Idea You Want to Start

This is the first step of the process. You’ve to decide on what you want to do online to make money. Are you good at content writing? Why not look into starting a freelance writing business? There are internet entrepreneurs and webmasters that would gladly hire you to write content for them. Your content writing services will get high paying clients if you can prove it that you are better than others.

Majority of internet entrepreneurs don’t have the time to write content or the writing skill to research and create high quality SEO articles. Even in this age of AI writing tools, some online business owners still find it difficult to humanize the content after it has been spurned out by artificial intelligence tools.

Your task is to identify your digital skills or forte and use it as a service to earn money online. This is not just for freelance writers but it applies to any business idea you’re contemplating to start.

Step #2: Identify Problems in Your Target Niche

Let’s continue with our earlier example of a freelance content writer for hire. Your primary goal is to provide freelance writing services to internet business owners who need content for their blogs and websites. With this in mind, ask yourself what specific areas can you be of help to them?

Are you good at writing blog posts? Do you’ve copywriting skills? Do you see yourself ghostwriting books for busy people like celebrities? What about providing content strategy and content marketing services as a package? The list goes on!

The truth is that anywhere you can identify a problem, there is always the need for solution. You can make use of available keyword research tools and questions and answers sites to gauge the demand of a service or product you hope to offer or sell.

Step #3: Make Sure There is Enough Demand for Your Solution if You Decide to Create It

You’ve to validate the viability or profitability of all side hustle ideas which you want to venture into before you step your foot at the door. This will give you an assurance that your effort, energy and money investments will not go down the drain.

You need enough leads or prospects to market your product or service to. A good rule of the thumb is to build an email list of subscribers from scratch in your target niche and send them questionnaires or surveys to gauge their interest or needs.

But you can only do this with a good list building software. An autoresponder will enable you to collect email address of every potential customer in exchange for a gift. It will also help you to communicate with them with high impact content, promote products and services as well as nurture your leads.

Step #4: Build a Website as Your Business Office or Gateway to Deliver the Solution

This is where this system gets interesting. As you’ve guessed, you need a platform to host whatever content, product or service you want to sell or promote to your target market. A website is like your digital shelf to display your goods and wares for the global public to see.

If you fail to invest about $50 (Fifty Dollars) to build a website that will enable you to make money online, you’re not ready to start side hustles yet. Seriously! But what you may not even realize is that creating a blog with self-hosted WordPress.org can double as your website.

Starting a blog website will make it easy for you to manage your online business ideas in one place. Even if you don’t have any side hustle ideas to choose from at the moment, you can go ahead to start a blog and start learning the ropes of blogging. Just pick a niche topic, register a domain name and get web hosting to create a blog.

If you ask me, starting a blog and blogging consistently is the most profitable side hustle because from your blog you can turn any idea into a business if it resonates with your target niche. A blog is your personal diary of communicating with the world on topics of interest and getting opinions and reactions from your readers.

What you need to create a blog is just to register a domain name and buy web hosting from a reliable website hosting company. If you sign up with a web hosting company that supports WordPress hosting, you’ve no problem building a website even as a beginner. You don’t need to hire a web designer to build a blog or website. With WordPress CMS software, you’ll be able to install template or theme to represent your blog website.

For less than $30 for the first year, Namecheap web hosting will provide you with a platform to create a blog on a self-hosted WordPress CMS platform seamlessly.

I wrote a simple guide to help you register a domain name and buy web hosting from Namecheap from this link. You can download it, read it and use it as a guide to set up your blog in a matter of minutes.

Step #5: Use Your Website to Promote Your Solution

In case you are not aware yet, your blog website is your online marketing platform which you can use to achieve your business goals in the long term. It’s your virtual advertising billboard, so to speak. You can always channel targeted traffic from various sources such as social media, guest blogging, forum posting, etc, to your blog and convert them to take specific action.

The best way to get started is through blogging and content marketing. And if you’ve fully optimized your on-page SEO, every off-site blog promotion you engage yourself in will give you maximum results ultimately.

But you’ve to make sure you’ve social share buttons on your blog website to make it easy for your readers to promote your blog in their networks and connections on your behalf.

Email marketing is one of the best ways to promote your website and/or product or service to your targeted followers who have opted to sign up for your newsletter. But you need to subscribe to an email service provider to be able to use their software or app. GetResponse email marketing software has a free autoresponder for new subscribers to test the waters from this link.

Step #6: Make Money Online on the Side

At this level, you should be receiving traction and targeted website traffic on a consistent basis. Your task now is to monitor your metrics or analytics and make necessary improvements. However, you should be aware that promoting your blog should be on a consistent basis and not by fits and starts.

For me, creating a blog and constantly publishing content on it after doing on-page optimization is the best and most profitable side hustle to make money online. Monetizing a blog that is receiving targeted visitors monthly with ad networks and affiliate links is enough to pay the bills and invest.

In other words, your blog will serve as an online marketing platform and asset for you to promote, digital skills, sell digital products, promote affiliate products, enter joint ventures (JV), and so on. This has been the secret to my successful digital marketing efforts on the internet.

Your feedback and comments are highly welcome and appreciated!

HostGator website hosting

I use HostGator website hosting services and you can click here to sign up with HostGator and also register a free domain name for the first year. Blogging is my number one side hustle business idea and for good reasons.  Creating a blog for your online business serves different purposes. It can double or triple as your ecommerce store, digital office and consulting outfit if you’re an expert in your field.

With that said, let’s go through everything you need to know on how to start a side hustle business and thrive online.

What is a Side Hustle Business?

A side hustle is a business you do on the side outside your regular day job. The basic idea and motivation is to use the profits accruing from your side business to supplement your salary or wages from your 9 to 5 day job. With inflation constantly rising globally, bills are piling up and increasing for homes and families. And to meet up with spending demands of individuals and maintain their lifestyles, you’ve to find ways to augment your weekly or monthly income. It’s become a case of survival of the fittest!

This is why side hustling has become the buzz word on the internet today. Personally, I was able to quit my day job when I discovered that I was making money online more than my regular salary while spending even less time to run and grow my online business.

However, the type of side project you start should depend on a number of factors such as what you enjoy doing, your passion, interest, experience, education, training, and the like. Even if you cannot think of any side hustle idea at the moment, you can learn digital marketing skills in a matter of weeks or months and use it to start an online business successfully.

I’ve discussed with a lot of successful bloggers who started off with nothing fantastic or spectacular but having the end in mind i.e. to add value to the marketplace and get rewarded in return at the end. You don’t have to be an expert at the beginning but you must strive to stand out ultimately with an USP (unique selling proposition). This will be part of your branding strategies.

Tools and Resources You Need to Get Started

Although you can learn how to make money online without spending anything, this will be a long route to ply for you not to get worn out any time soon. You’ve to invest money, time and energy in order to translate your side hustle ideas into minimum valuable product, service or information that people will be willing to pay for.

For instance, when I signed up with HostGator web hosting to create a blog website, I paid about $86.04 for one year for my website hosting fees. And because I was willing and able to perform requisite daily tasks to succeed with my side hustles, I made that money back in less than 90 days of blogging. It's even cheaper now to sign up with HostGator as of writing.

Steps to Start a Side Hustle Business and Make Money

The steps below are what I always follow as a ritual to build any side gig which I’ve researched and I’m convinced that it will earn money online for me as quickly as possible.

  1. Choose a side business idea
  2. Research market viability for (i) above
  3. Get a domain name and web hosting
  4. Create a WordPress blog on your domain
  5. Create content and publish
  6. Monetize your blog
  7. Promote your blog
  8. Measure, review and analyze
  9. Make money online

I’ll discuss the above 9 steps on how to start a side hustle business successfully and you can start implementing the tasks involved almost immediately. As for me, I see the side hustle business beyond making money to pay the bills or live the life of my dreams. I take it as a religion. It takes faith and sacrifice to get the expected results.

Step #1: Choose a Side Business Idea

If you ask me, there are so many side hustles you can do to make money from home. But you’ve to settle for a profitable idea to start with. Broadly, you can create your own digital product and sell it online, provide freelance digital services and get paid or simply start a blog and make money blogging by recommending affiliate products to your website visitors and earning affiliate commissions in the process.

There are no hard and fast rules for you to choose a particular side hustle idea to start with. What is important is to align your choice with your passion, hobby, interest, knowledge, experience, education, training, etc. This will help you to get keyed up and flow for the long haul when creating content to publish on your blog and/or doing guest posting or content marketing.

For instance, I’m thinking of starting a personal finance blog in no distant future because I’ve a strong interest in this niche market. Besides, I’m an accountant by education, profession and training. So, I should be able to easily read up on this topic so that I can meet up with my goal of becoming a successful personal finance expert.

I’m brooding over this niche because I’ve worked as a financial advisor and business consultant at some point in time in my working career. This is how to start a side hustle business idea which you can relate with at a personal level. The best thing you can do now is to take a pen and paper and take inventory of the side hustles that appeal to you.

Obviously, you’ll prune this list down to a sizeable number when you conduct market viability test on each of them. If it’s not going to be profitable in your wildest imagination, there is to point dissipating your time, energy and money to get started in the first place.

After going through step 2 of this side hustle business guide which I’ll explain shortly, you should be able to decide for yourself the type of side business idea that will be good and profitable for you in the long run. But I strongly recommend that you create a blog to get started and learn the ropes.

It will give you a sense of direction and an edge as you learn, grow and progress in your target niche market. The worst case scenario that could happen is to end up monetizing your blog with Google Adsense which will still be able to pay the bills and then some.

To sum up this section on how to start a side hustle business and thrive online, you can:

  1. Create digital product or service and sell it for profit if you’re an expert on something.
  2. Provide freelance business services and get paid e.g. website design, graphic design, content writing, etc.
  3. Write product reviews as a digital publisher and include affiliate links in your content to useful products, services, apps and software which you are affiliated to.
  4. Provide other essential web services based on your creativity or digital skills such as domain flipping, brokerage services, website flipping, and so on.

Step #2: Research Market Viability for Your Side Hustle Idea

Although your primary goal of starting an online business is to make money and get comfortable, it certainly goes far beyond that. Even if you’re doing this for the money, you should always find ways to add value to people’s lives by solving their pain points with the right solutions.

The first point of call is to go to where your target market congregate and take the market pulse. What are their challenges, pain points, problems, etc? Will they be “willing and able” to pay for the solution if provided? Are there desperate buyers in this market? How is the demography like? Is it an evergreen market or a passing fad?

What about the market size? Can you spot market gaps you can easily fill up which existing products did not address? Is there sufficient information you can research and glean to create high quality and unique content? What types of search queries are available to work with?

You should be able to distinguish between informational and transactional search terms in this regard. Is there list building opportunity so that you can make passive income online sooner or later while growing your side hustle? There is whole gamut of market viability and profitability tests you’ve to conduct in order to be sure whether to step your feet at the door.

Finally, for you to achieve this goal, you’ve to juxtapose the total costs of providing solutions to solve problems for your target audience with the income accruable to you. This will help you to evaluate the profitability or otherwise of your side gig efforts. So, if a market is not viable, it doesn’t make sense to dissipate your time, energy and money to remain in that business.

This is why researching market viability or profitability is critical to your success.  And you can use a number of tools and apps to do this exercise including Google Keyword Planner, questions and answers sites like Quora.com, AnswerThePublic.com, BuzzSumo.com, Semrush.com, Ahrefs.com, etc.

Step #3: Get a Domain Name and Web Hosting

This is the section where you’ve to invest little money to start your own business online. You must register a domain name and buy web hosting for you to be able to build a website or create a blog. A domain name is your internet business address. It’s the URL that will take your target audience to your website, landing page, lead magnet page, and so forth.

It costs about $10 per year to register and/or renew a domain name and you don’t have exclusive right to a domain if you fail to renew it. In other words, you can lose a valuable domain name to cyber squatters or domain flippers if you negligently forget to renew your domain name.

For example, as the owner of this side hustle blog, I can lose it outright if I omit to renew it after the grace period expires and it is finally deleted from the registry. My advice for aspiring online entrepreneurs who perceive that their domain names are valuable should keep on renewing it even if they cannot continue to maintain the website or blog associated with it.

If you’re heavily involved in domain flipping business like me, you’ll understand why holding on to a domain name without allowing it to drop is important and profitable.

You can buy domain name from Namecheap from this link. They are cheap and reliable domain registrar to sign up with. Depending on the type of side business you hope to start, you can register brandable domain, keyword domain, exact match domain (EMD), product domain, services domain, to name a few.

On a personal level, I like to separate my domain name registrar from my web host in order to allow me manage my portfolio of domain names as a domainer.

As for your website hosting, you can sign up with HostGator.com from this link. HostGator web hosting is reliable, cheap and they have excellent customer support services to wit. If you’ve successfully used the link above to sign up, you can reach out to me from here and request for my premium blogging guide gratis.

A domain name and web hosting services are what you need to build your website for free. Self-hosted WordPress blog can be customized to build a website or create a blog.

Step #4: Create a WordPress Blog on Your Domain

With content management system (CMS) platform like WordPress.org, you don’t need to be tech savvy to build a simple website or build a blog to start a side hustle business anymore. I’ve built pockets of niche websites and blogs over time without knowing how to code, HTML and CSS.

If you download my blogging for money ebook, you’ll discover the secrets of how to make money blogging online. From your hosting account dashboard, you can locate Softaculous app which makes it easy to install WordPress blog on your domain.

But you’ve to customize and optimize your blog for on-page SEO (search engine optimization) in order to prime it and make it search engine friendly. If you want a unique look and feel of your blog, you can browse ThemeForest marketplace to download and install premium WordPress theme that will complement your side business goals.

For added website functionalities, you can install and activate specific plugins related to website load speed, security, optimization, backup, content gating, etc.

Beyond this, you can install Google Analytics and integrate Google Search Console so that you can have data and metrics to review and improve upon as your side hustle business starts growing by leaps and bounds.

In addition, you should not forget to create pages that are essential to your website such as about me, contact me, resources, sitemap, and the like. You can configure some of these pages to show up at the navigation menu at the top right corner of your blog.

Step #5: Create Content and Publish

The currency of the web is content. Believe it or not, the World Wide Web is driven by content. It is only natural that you should be prepared to write your first blog post and publish as soon as you’ve finished with on-page SEO of your blog website.

Content can be in the form of blog posts, SEO articles, videos, infographics, audio, podcast, webinar, PDF ebook, email marketing messages, just name it. And as a digital marketing expert, you should see content marketing as the major channel of driving free targeted traffic to your website.

In one of my subsequent blog articles, I’ll discuss in detail how to create high quality content like this text post on how to start a side hustle business and thrive online. I’ll encourage you to bookmark this side business blog for easy access in the future.

Step #6: Monetize Your Blog

It’s important to remember the common phrase that says “first things first”. For you to be able to monetize your blog, you’ve to publish enough content that will not put off your readers. I know the motivation behind starting a side hustle is to make money in the first place.

There are many ways to monetize your website including but not limited to affiliate product links, selling your own digital products, providing freelance services, accepting sponsored posts, selling advert spaces, integrating Google Adsense codes, and a host of other blog monetization methods.

You’ve to select a method that works well with your blog content.

Step #7:  Promote Your Blog

Yes, this is the section that will make or mar your side hustle business. It is wishful thinking to have the notion that the world will beat a path to your doorstep (or blog website) if you create a blog without promoting it.

There are broadly two (2) ways to promote your website i.e. free methods and paid methods. The best free ways of generating targeted traffic include search engine optimization, content marketing, list building, guest posting, free ebook distribution, and so on.

Step #8: Measure, Review and Analyze

At this stage, you’ve come a long way. Kudos! But as it were, not everything you’ve been doing will be spot on. You’ve to analyze variances between your expected results and actual results from your analytics and adjust where necessary for improvements.

For example, if you discover that how-to blog posts bring in more website traffic than listicles, you may want to focus more on writing content about how to do things.

The paid advertising methods you should consider will include PPC (pay per click) and banner adverts.

Step #9: Make Money Online

This is the final step as a side hustler. It’s now time for you to start smiling to the bank after all the time, efforts and money invested to make your side business stand out from the crowd. If you’ve followed and implemented everything I’ve discussed in this blog article on how to start a side hustle and thrive online, you should not find a hard time making money.

All you’ve to do is to sit back, relax and enjoy your money or take a vacation. And if you’re a digital nomad like me you’ll be traveling the world over as a location independent entrepreneur.
