How to Write an Ebook and Make Money from It Online -Part 2

how to write an ebook and make money

In part one of this 2-part series on how to write an ebook and make money, I discussed the basic steps to become a successful book writer and/or author on the internet. In today’s blog post, I’ll continue with the discussion on how to write your ebook and take it to the bank in a matter of days.

Step #9: Price Your Ebook

First, ebook pricing is a function of many factors which I’ll briefly look into. In pricing your ebook, you’ve to consider your expertise and credibility with your target audience, demography and purchasing power of your target readers, and niche responsiveness to similar books on sale, etc.

If you own a blog and you’ve been regularly publishing content on it while focusing on your ebook topic, you should have an inkling of the topic’s popularity and how to price an ebook based on the information available to you. I’ve had situations where my readers ask me to write an ebook on a particular topic instead of them frantically trying to glean pieces of information here and there on the internet.

In this case, I can quickly whip up a book in a day or two as a freebie around this topic and use it to start building an email list for an ebook launch somewhere down the road. From there, I’ll be able to use questionnaire to elicit an average price my list members would be willing to pay.

But you’ve to be flexible in your pricing by testing various price points and know what the optimal best price is. This is where your sales volume bumps because it’s affordable to a larger number of your target niche market.

Also, you can price your ebook based on industry or competitors’ pricing. For example, if you’re self-publishing on Amazon KDP, the most popular price ranges are between $0.99 and $9.99. You’ll earn higher royalties when you price your ebook between $4.99 and $9.99.

What is the most important is the perceived value of the book you’re selling. This can be measured by the unique information and angle you’re providing your solutions from or by the content in the ebook and/or complementary bonuses you’re adding to the main digital product on sale.

Step #10: Set Up Your Sales, Order, Thank You and Download Pages

At this level, you want to set up your sales, order, thank you and download pages so that buyers can pay with their credit card and be able to download a copy of your digital product. If you’re using self-hosted WordPress blog platform, there are e-commerce plugins you can install to complete this task effortlessly and seamlessly.

But if you’re using HTML landing page template to sell ebooks on your own website, you may have to set up things manually. To this end, you’ve to create a separate folder in the root directory of your web hosting servers to house your digital content when you upload the ebook for sale as well as the sales page, order page, thank you page and download page.

However, make sure you exclude this folder from being indexed by Google or other search engines in the robots.txt file.

For you to do this successfully, you’ve to register a domain name and buy website hosting from a reliable web hosting company. Also, having a web host that supports WordPress hosting will enable you to set up things yourself without hiring any web designer or freelancer.

I’ll recommend HostGator web hosting for you if you don’t have a website hosting services yet. They are affordable and reliable with an excellent support service. Click this link to purchase web hosting from HostGator and get in touch with me for my premium blogging guide which will help you to start a blog and make money in a matter of weeks. It’s a blogging course you cannot afford to miss if you want to start a blog and make money blogging.

Step #11: Promote Your Ebook

Ebook promotion is where the success or failure of selling your ebook really lies. Ebook marketing is something you’ve to do consistently using variety of digital marketing strategies. Some of the best ways to promote your ebook is through blogging, content marketing, social media marketing, list building, just to mention a few.

You’re not going to look salesy as you constantly engage with your target readers with high quality content. As a matter of fact, your goal is to systematically take your readers through the buyer’s journey and close the sale in the end. And whoever is satisfied with the purchase will even become your evangelist to others who may have a need for your ebook.

If you’ve integrated deep on-page SEO (search engine optimization) in your blogging strategy and deliberately target low-competition long tail keywords, you should be able to rank on SERP (search engine results page) and get free targeted traffic consistently from search engines such as Google.com, Yahoo.com and Bing.com.

You can also use social media marketing to engage your prospects and leads by creating accounts with social media channels like LinkedIn.com, Facebook.com, Instagram.com, Pinterest.com, and X.com (formerly Twitter.com) which are the major platforms you should target. Social media marketing is a potent way to get targeted website visitors who are willing to act.

This is a very effective strategy if you’re able to set up an email marketing system on a specific landing page on your blog website to collect leads as you direct them from your social media accounts to your website.

Step #12: Set Up an Email Marketing Software, Affiliate Program or Joint Venture (JV)

For you not to feel overwhelmed at the beginning, it’s in your best interest to create an email marketing system using a reliable autoresponder software like GetResponse.com email marketing software.

It will enable you to start building an email list of subscribers from scratch as quickly as possible. Having a list of at least 100 subscribers who are highly targeted can go a long way to earn passive income online for you, month after month.

Statistics have it that email marketing is worth an average of $40 ROI (return on investment) for every dollar spent. This is to show you how important it is to build an email list of subscribers early enough for your ebook marketing success. If you don’t create a sales funnel to offer gift like free PDF ebook, video, email course, etc, you’ll continue to struggle to make money on the internet.

As soon as you start building an email list, the next task is to consistently nurture your leads by drip feeding your list members from your email marketing campaigns with unique, high-quality, shareable and linkable content.

Setting up an affiliate program is fast and easy if you go with affiliate programs networks like Clickbank.com, Impact.com, CJ.com, etc. However, the digital product you’re selling will determine the affiliate network you decide to sign up with. But I know that Clickbank.com is popular for digital products downloads such as electronic books and training videos.

As for joint ventures, you’ve to scout and research the internet to know JV partners you should make proposals to. However, having internet marketing clout and influence will make it easy for you to strike a deal. This is why building trust and credibility early enough on the World Wide Web are paramount to your success.

Step #13: Track and Analyze Your Traffic Metrics

The good news about every online business startup is that you can track and measure data such as sources of website traffic, volume of website visitors, search queries used to find specific web pages on your site, and so on.

And with the free Google Analytics and Google Search Console, you’re good to go without spending a dime to track, measure and improve on your website activities including content marketing.

Step #14: Make Money Selling Ebooks

If you’ve properly set up your sales order page to receive payments, you can start promoting your ebook to your target market as soon as possible. The best way to do this is to follow the ordering process yourself and be sure there is no hitch or glitch in the payment system.

With PayPal payment system, you can easily test this out and refund yourself.

Step #15: Scale, Rinse and Repeat in Other Niches

Writing and selling ebooks online is straightforward after the first attempt. You don’t have to fret over it at all. As a beginning ebook author, I was able to hit the ground running then and I’m happy I got myself started without the bell and whistle of mega launches you hear about online.

If you want to make $1000 a month online with certainty, simply sit down and dedicate few hours per day to learn how to write an ebook and sell it online. You’ll be glad you did!

As you can see, that is all to ebook writing and making money online from your side hustles. I want to read your comments, ask me questions and tell me specific topics you want me to write about. I’ll be glad to do that for my community of like minds. To your success!

How to Write an Ebook and Make Money from It Online

how to write an ebook and make money

If you’re searching for side hustle business ideas with an element of passive income attached to it, I can tell you that learning how to write an ebook is the best way to get started. There are so many ways to make money online from writing an ebook and distributing it globally or locally as the case may be.

In this blog post, I’ll lay everything bare for you to hit the ground running if you’re determined to start writing ebooks for money. As a matter of fact, there are creative ways to make passive income online with your ebook writing skill. I’ve been writing and selling ebooks online for decades now and, at a time, I thought the rising popularity of video marketing will obscure electronic books on sale. Hey, I was damn wrong!

A lot of readers out there still prefer electronic books to videos for personal reasons plus the cost of data involved in downloading videos especially in most developing countries of the world. But what you’ve to take home from here is that ebook marketing and consumption is not fading away any time soon.

So, if you learn how to write an ebook and make money from it, you’ve learned one of the best digital skills of all times. I’ll break down the ebook writing process for you which you can take to the bank if you’re not lazy to write your first ebook for sale sooner rather than later.

As a first ebook author and going forward, there are so many benefits that will accrue to you if you can write an ebook to sell for profit, or give away for free online marketing, or to demonstrate your expertise or thought leadership on a subject matter or simply use it to build an email list of subscribers in your target niche market.

My tried and tested steps of writing an ebook successfully and taking it to the marketplace are:

  1. Choose a niche market or target audience to serve
  2. Research your target audience’s pain points that need urgent solutions
  3. Choose an overarching and in-demand topic to write about
  4. Create an ebook outline to guide you while writing
  5. Write the ebook
  6. Proofread and edit the ebook
  7. Format the ebook
  8. Write the sales letter to promote your ebook
  9. Price your ebook
  10. Set up sales page and download page and other essential web pages
  11. Promote your ebook
  12. Set up email marketing software, affiliate program or joint venture (JV)
  13. Track and analyze your traffic metrics
  14. Make money selling ebooks
  15. Scale, rinse and repeat in other niches

First, you can write an ebook and sell it online from your own website or simply go to any third-party websites such as Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) where you can upload your ebook on the go and sell to an already existing market. There are benefits attached to any of the methods which you decide to make use of over the other.

But if you understand the process to a Tee, you can do both and be in more profits. If you ask me, creating and selling digital products is a game changer for any entrepreneur who wants to learn how to make passive income online, month in and month out.

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of writing and selling ebooks online. Frankly speaking, ebook authoring is not rocket science; anybody can learn how to write an ebook and make money online as you’ll discover shortly.

Step #1: Choose a Niche Market or Target Audience to Serve

In writing an ebook, you cannot be everything to everybody. No! You want to be recognized as a specialist or expert on a subject matter and not a generalist. A generalist is like a rolling stone that gathers no moss. The only way your target audience will take you seriously in your ebook marketing campaigns is when you’re perceived as an expert in your specific field.

So, your starting point is to choose a niche market where you sincerely believe you know and have a lot of information you can teach and share with your potential readers. This is why niching down is very important for every successful online business owner.

For instance, if you know much about money matters and budgeting, you can write an ebook on personal finance and focus on that niche. You can even dig deeper if you think there is a unique angle or knowledge where you can have an edge and be able to stand out from the crowd.

There are many niches out there that you can choose from if you want to write your first ebook. From off the top of my head, I can talk about niches such as make money on the internet, parenting, relationship and marriage, green energy, business, investments, travelling and tour, self-help and personal development, weight loss and fitness, health and wellness, beauty and lifestyle, diet and exercise, career and professional development, just to name a few.

What you’ll be concerned about is to evaluate your interest vis-à-vis profitability of your target market. A good intersection is where your potential profits will be able to cover your expenses and then some to reward you for your time, energy and efforts invested in the ebook business without compromising quality.

Because you’ll be selling downloadable digital product, you’re almost guaranteed 95 to 98 percent profit for every ebook sold. The best part is that you’ll take more profit if you sell ebooks from your own website by setting up a simple payment gateway like PayPal.com to receive money from buyers.

Creating PayPal payment button is the easiest way to start selling ebooks on the internet.

However, choosing a niche market for your ebook writing business, you’ve to consider these criteria:

  • Have above average expert knowledge on the topic or you’re willing to learn and research.
  • Make sure there is enough demand for the topic that you want to write about.
  • Discover if your potential leads or prospects have disposable income to spend or willing to buy your digital product.
  • Create a mailing list, if possible, to test the waters and gauge the response or outcome of your target audience.
  • Start a blog in your target market, create content related to your intended ebook and follow the comments section to measure the interest of your readers.

Even if the demand for an ebook will not be profitable to you, creating a blog in that niche can help you to make money online through other blog monetization channels such as Google AdSense, sponsored posts, and so on.

Step #2: Research Your Target Audience’s Pain Points that Need Urgent Solutions

If you find a market to serve, the next step is to research their pain points that need urgent solutions. This is where market research is vital to understanding the solution your target audience will take a bite on, embrace and pay for.

I’m not talking about run-of-the-mill solutions which are basically generic and can be found for free online. No! You want to professionally present answers to burning questions, proffer specific solution to desperate problems or provide detailed information or guide on a subject or topic.

If you’ve been on the World Wide Web for any length of time, you’ll agree with me that most information marketing and digital products for sale are regurgitated pieces without adding any tangible value to people’s lives. Your goal is to be a problem solver or solution provider by unleashing quality information in the ebook to add value to people’s lives.

You cannot discover problems which people are facing by guess work. You’ve to hear from the horse’s mouth by asking and listening to them. And you can do this through niche forums membership, questions and answers sites, surveys, questionnaires, email list, blogging, making use of keyword research tools, and having conversations via social media channels.

You can really get creative with this. Make the efforts to find out where your target audience congregate or hang out and be part of them. Listen to their challenges, rantings and the solutions they have subscribed to in the past and didn’t work exactly as they expected. You may not re-invent the wheel per se but you can look out for content gaps to fill up and make money with your ebook.

Information marketing is big business and a huge industry. You’ve to find a unique angle to attack it from and make money online. Every day, people are frantically searching for information on the World Wide Web to achieve specific and desired results and you can be the gateway (for a fee of course) to make it happen!

It’s the problems which you’ve discovered from this step that will form the foundation of choosing an overarching topic to write about in the next step of this ebook writing course.

Step #3: Choose an Overarching and In-demand Topic to Write About

The topic you choose to write about should obviously have subtopics cluster that will address the problems of your target audience with your ebook solution. For example, if we look at personal finance again, you’ll have subtopics such as earning income, students’ debt, budgeting, savings, investing, and so on.

You can decide to create an ebook on how to start side hustles to pay off student loans in record time. As a matter of fact, I’m making serious preparations to start a personal finance blog to teach and help my readers on how to build wealth and prosper in this age of technology. It’s going to be a no-brainer blog on building wealth on a budget based on my experience, education and training as an accountant and entrepreneur.

If you create a blog and start building an email list of subscribers, it will be easy for you to send out questionnaires and conduct online surveys to elicit information from your followers about what they want to learn from you. You can sign up for my business newsletter and download my free ebook on how to start a blog and make money from this link.

As soon as you’ve a topic to make an ebook, you can use keyword research tools to double check the average monthly search volume of the major keyword in the niche. This is to further confirm if there is enough demand beyond your circle of followers or tribe.

You’ve to conduct your due diligence to evaluate and access the competition as well. Look out for other merchants, vendors and authors who are actively promoting similar products on the same topic. This will help you to discover if you’re missing out any relevant information which should be included in the electronic book.

At several instances, I do subscribe to email newsletters of these book promoters to learn about complementary bonuses that they are also adding to the ebook for sale. As an ebook author or writer, you must not leave any stone unturned if your goal is to sell high volume of your book in the foreseeable future.

Your primary target is to get positive book reviews at the beginning which you can wield as testimonials and social proof to sell more of it.

Step #4: Create an Ebook Outline to Guide You While Writing

Before now, I guess you’ve been taking down notes of every conceivable ebook idea or subtopic to incorporate in your writing project. Creating an ebook outline will guide you while writing your piece without missing out on essential points which will make the ebook worthwhile for your potential buyers.

I always take the time to create an ebook outline because it may eventually double as my table of contents. Also, while writing the sales letter, I’ll use the detailed outline to create bullet points of the benefits derivable from purchasing my ebook.

Some years back, I wrote an electronic book on how to write an ebook and make money. One of the subtopics I discussed was how to secure your ebook on your web hosting servers from unauthorized downloads so that you can sell more of it.

Although I retired the book after some years of selling it, I had a lot of sales because I made sure every information I wanted to write about and include in the ebook were in the outline. It made it easy for me to write a compelling sales letter that was all-encompassing and I did not have refunds.

Every chapter will focus on an integral topic with subtopics associated with it. A good outline helps to organize and guide your thoughts while writing an ebook. However, some authors can prefer to use mind map tool to achieve the same goal as it’s visually appealing to follow through.

Step #5: Write the Ebook

Writing an ebook is where the bulk of the work is. If you’re lazy to the bone, you may not be able to complete your first ebook writing project in a year or so. But always bear it in mind that the relevance and quality of your book is paramount to your target audience.

The common saying that the taste of the pudding is in the eating comes to mind here. You want to sell an ebook on a topic where you’ll get rave reviews from customers who are satisfied with their purchases. This is why expertise on the subject matter is important as well as your internet research skills to find vital information to include in your work.

While creating your ebook outline is the planning stage, writing the ebook is the execution phase. In other words, your book outline is the skeleton, and the actual writing is the task to flesh up the skeleton and make it visible and tangible in the marketplace.

First, you’ve to create a deadline to finish writing your electronic book and make sure you follow through. Otherwise, you may continue to procrastinate endlessly without any result. As much as you can, don’t bother about editing and proofreading at this stage. Your ebook draft is not a finished product yet.

There will be a time to cross your t’s and dot your i’s. You can call this the “brain dump” stage.

Your main concern is to write all the ideas in your head on paper or computer which is the crux of the matter. So, re-organizing your thoughts for coherence and cohesion will come later.

You’ve to weave in stories, facts, figures, statistics, quotes and references where necessary to buttress your credibility and authenticity on every information you’re sharing. You should not forget that writing an ebook is the building stage while editing is the decorating phase. Your goal is to complete the writing work as soon as possible and start decorating and formatting it into the final package that will be ready for the market.

If you’re determined to take this as your main side hustle business, you’ll soon discover that learning and mastering how to write an ebook and make money is a piece of cake. It’s all about what you know or willing to research and be willing and able to pass on the information to your intended audience succinctly.

This is why your writing style, tone and lexicon of your ebook should resonate with your target audience. It helps to clear the fog! But you’ve to be conversational and friendly in your writing of course.

Step #6: Edit and Proofread the Ebook

At this point, you’ve done 70 percent of the writing work. This is the time to start putting finishing touches to your digital product package. How well you edit and proofread your ebook will determine the high perceived value people will attach to it.

Obviously, it’s expensive to hire a copyeditor but there are other ways to go around it. You can engage your close family and friends to do it for you. If you have an eye for details, you can edit and proofread the ebook yourself. The only thing is to leave it for 2 to 3 days after writing an ebook before you start editing it.

Allowing some days to elapse before editing and proofreading a book will give you a set of fresh eyes and mind to quickly spot grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, sentence structure, and so on.

Step #7: Format the Ebook

At this level, you’ve an ebook to sell but you’ve to make it presentable and attractive. Formatting and designing your ebook start from the ebook title and cover image. If you don’t know how to make an ebook cover with free design tools like Canva, you can hire a freelancer to do it for you for a fee.

Aligning the chapters, pages and images of your ebook so that it will be good and easy to read is what matters. I started using OpenOffice.org writing software which is free open source and it has been awesome. I only invest few dollars to create an ecover to paste on the front page of the ebook and I’m done. I focus more on the meat (i.e. content) of the book that I want to write.

Step #8: Write the Sales Letter to Promote Your Ebook

Now that your ebook is ready to launch, what is the next step? You’ve to write a sales letter to promote your ebook. A sales or landing page is where the sales copy will be uploaded if you’re selling the ebook from your website.

Even if you’re not selling from your own website, it’s important you register a domain name and buy web hosting to start a blog targeting your niche. Blogging is one of the best digital marketing strategies you can deploy to promote your ebook, digital products and services on the internet.

Getting a domain name and website hosting is cheap and affordable. HostGator web hosting is highly reliable, and I’ll gladly recommend them for your needs. I use HostGator web hosting company to host majority of my blogs and websites. Click here to sign up with HostGator and check out the hosting plans that fits your budget and requirements.

The content of your sales letter includes several points which I’ll list here:

  • A compelling or catchy headline.
  • Sub headline reinforcing the benefit stated in the main headline.
  • Introduction of your ebook as solution to identified problems.
  • Statement of the problems which you’ve an answer or solution to.
  • Bullet points of the benefits of buying your ebook.
  • Call to action (CTA) directing your readers where to buy it i.e. the order page.
  • Testimonials and social proof, if any, to encourage visitors to open their wallets now.
  • Money back guarantee to remove fear and doubt from your leads and prospects.

You can look at your competitors’ sales letters to pick their brains. Your landing page can make or mar your sales funnel. So, you must spend time to write a good sales copy to sell your ebook. In my next blog post on how to write an ebook and make money, I’ll discuss the remaining steps to help you get started in earnest.

How to Make $1,000 a Month Online from Home with Ease

how to make $1000 a month online from home

Every day, ordinary but smart people like you are starting a business online to make money on a regular basis. It’s not rocket science because anybody with good business ideas that address pain points can succeed on the internet if he follows a workable system to deliver the goods to his target audience.

If you hone the virtues of determination and the willingness to learn digital skills or create a product or service which people need, you’ve what it takes to make $1,000 a month online from home. I’ll show you from this blog post how to turn side hustle ideas to problem-solving business which will earn passive income for you into the foreseeable future.

This is a comprehensive guide which will teach you how to start an online business successfully, grow it over time while you earn and thrive, year in and year out. However, this is not a quick cash system or Ponzi scheme where you are promised how to make money on the internet while you sleep and without lifting a finger! No!

You’ve to set up a business system in the capacity of a problem solver or solution provider while you learn digital marketing skills to promote your brand, product or service to your prospects and target customers.

Let’s assume that our goal is to make $1,000 a month online from home. In a 30-day period, you’re expecting to earn an average of $33.33 per day to reach your monthly income goal.

Broadly speaking, there are four ways to achieve this goal, viz:

  1. Create a digital product and sell it online,
  2. Provide a service as a freelancer based on your experience or expertise,
  3. Promote affiliate products and earn commission, or
  4. Do a combination of the above 3 options and everything in between.

Now, I’m going to call a spade a spade. If you really want to make $1,000 or more every month, the best option is to create a blog of your own. It doesn’t matter whether you are a digital product creator, freelance writer, digital publisher or blogger.

The basic idea behind this is for you to stand out as a brand business with a permanent virtual office. It will help you in so many ways in the long run such as entering joint venture partnerships with ease, getting fast approvals from affiliate programs, building credibility and trust with your prospects, leads and customers in your space.

Creating a blog website comes at a minimal cost anyway. For self-hosted WordPress blog, you’ve to register a domain name and get web hosting to get it online. HostGator website hosting offers free domain name registration when you sign up with their reliable web hosting services.

Even if you’re a beginner or newbie, HostGator stellar customer support will guide you all the way to get your blog running smoothly where necessary.

With web hosting fee of under $200 for 3 years, you can start your own business online seamlessly. After signing up with HostGator, install WordPress blog on your domain name, do on-page optimization, create essential web pages such as about us and contact us, create and publish your first blog post, monetize your blog and start website promotion as soon as possible.

Even if you’re not confident enough to hit the ground running yet, with a blog website you may be able to get approval from few affiliate programs to promote products and services that align with your overall blog theme. Personally, I work with big affiliate networks including Impact.com, CJ.com, and Clickbank.com to find complementary affiliate products and services to promote on my blog.

You only need to close 2 to 3 sales per day from an affiliate product that pays $20 affiliate commission per sale to make $1000 per month online while working from home.

For you to get results, your major focus will be on how to create high-quality content consistently and promote your blog to your target audience. The advantage of taking this step is to build a sustainable online business which will guarantee regular passive income when your blog website has fully gained traction and trust on the web.

Of a truth, a lot of aspiring online entrepreneurs don’t care to understand that one of the best ways to make money online is to start a blog around a topic of their skills, interests, hobbies, experience, passion or expertise.

From there, you’ll continue to publish content around searchable keywords and phrases that are informational and transactional in nature. I must admit it, the best way I learned digital marketing without breaking a sweat was to create a blog where I regularly publish blog posts around topical ideas which my intended readers want to know something about.

If you’re ambitious like me, you may want to sign up with reliable email marketing software as well to build your mailing list from the ground up. With GetResponse email marketing software and automation, you’ll be able to build an email list of subscribers from scratch. The people that sign up are your prospects and leads whom you can promote complementary products and services to down the line.

You can quickly create lead magnet which will provide solutions to questions people are asking or pain points they are grappling with for your target market to consume and get acquainted with you. A simple Google search and keyword research will reveal a lot of information for you to write an ebook or create a video which people will be raving about.

The first critical step to making $1,000 a month online from home is by building relationships early and often with your target customers. It’s the sacrifice which you must make by paying it forward through high-quality content creation to prove your knowledge, experience and expertise in your field.

It’s from this your efforts to give out for free something valuable first that you’ll be able to figure out on how to monetize your content. Because of urgent financial needs, people come online to search for ways to earn fast cash and subsequently get their fingers burnt. You should never put the cart before the horse in your entrepreneur’s journey. Be a problem solver or solution provider to earn big bucks online.

So, this is how to make $1000 a month online from home if I’m starting all over again as a beginner.

With your own domain name and website hosting, you can build a website or start a blog to promote your business locally and globally.

And because domain name registration is on first come first serve basis, holding all other factors constant, you may not be smart or lucky enough to get the exact domain name you desire to brand your business when you are starting out.

To this end, trading in domain names has become a huge money-making industry of sorts to discerning investors. Every now and then, you’ll come across domain aftermarkets where inventory of thousands to millions of names is listed for sale at prices you cannot fathom.

The question is, “Why is it so?” This is because business owners who want to grow their brands and project strong online presence are willing to invest tidy sum of money to buy a domain name which is specific to their business.

In this ultimate guide to domain flipping for beginners, I’m going to spill the beans on how to make money buying and selling domain names for profit. With as little as $10, you can buy a domain and sell it for quick cash. All you need is the requisite knowledge to pick up a quality domain name that ticks all the dots for a quick cash sale.

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through all the steps to research and get a domain name worth selling for cash. There is nothing complicated about buying and selling domain names on the World Wide Web. What you really need is the patience to research a good domain name with lots of potential buyers in sight before you step your foot at the door.

While it’s true that you can make money with domain names, it’s never a get rich quick scheme. Domain investing must be strategic for you to be able to turn it to a full-time side hustle business and make profit. In other words, you want to buy a domain name and quickly reach out to potential leads who are willing and able to pay premium money to own it as soon as possible.

Domaining is like digging the treasure trove to find precious gold. Imagine purchasing a domain for about $10 to $100 and selling it for $1000 or more within a period of 12 months without doing any grunt work other than listing it at secondary marketplaces like Atom.com, Dan.com, Afternic.com or GoDaddy.com!

A lot of domainers are making money online from domain name business investments on daily basis. But for you to be successful at domain investing, you’ve to hone strong digital marketing skills to identify real potential buyers in advance, have requisite business tools to work with, have gut feeling to know a domain worth buying and the creativity and foresight to spot diamonds in the rough besides setting aside reasonable amount of budget to get started.

But if you’re starting on a shoestring budget, setting aside between $50 and $100 cash investment will be okay to buy your first batch of domains of about 3 to 5. But the higher the budget, the better for you to turn in profits quickly as you’ll be able to leverage several sources to get premium domain names to resell for profit as quickly as possible.

For example, if you’ve starting budget of $1000, you’ll be able to tap into several marketplaces such as domain auctions, closeouts, backorder services and aftermarkets to source for and buy cheap but high-quality domain names you can quickly resell at a profit. This is one of the best ways to earn and thrive in this ever-competitive domain business.

With that said, let’s dive in!

Types of Domains for Sale

Depending on your research and conviction to register a domain, there are different variants of domains for sale which your potential buyers will find valuable. The most important factor before investing in a domain name is the value which your potential buyers will derive from your sale. What value will it bring to the table of any intending buyer?

If you cannot attach any value to your virtual real estate you intend to purchase, there is no reason to buy it in the first place. This is because it will be difficult for you to pitch, convince and sell such domain to any reachable entrepreneur who you may contact during your outbound marketing if need be.

In this blueprint, I’ll discuss domain for sale types which you can have success with.

  • Brandable domain names
  • Exact match domain (EMD)
  • Geo + keyword domains
  • Keyword + descriptive prefix or suffix

Brandable Domain Names

This type of name has to do with creativity and ability of a domainer to combine English words or letters to form a unique brand business name. For example, Google.com, YouTube.com and Facebook.com are brandable domain names. The creative word combination is unique and compelling. If you ask me what has “face” got to do with “book” in the Facebook domain name, I’ll not be able to give you a straightforward answer.

But selling brandable domains is slow and can tie down a lot of capital. You may hold your inventory for years before finding a buyer. The worst part is that it’s difficult to know exactly who your potential buyers are at the beginning of researching leads and prospects to market your domain for sale to.

In any case, you can focus on a niche per time which will make it easy for you to come up with viable domain name ideas to register or buy for reselling at a profit. Atom.com (formerlySquadhelp.com) is one of the best marketplaces to buy brandable domain names.

Exact Match Domain (EMD)

EMD is an exact keyword phrase registered as a website domain in the order it is being searched for online by users. For instance, “small business ideas” is a keyword phrase which internet users search for on monthly basis. Now, if you own the domain name, SmallBusinessIdeas.com, you’ve an exact match domain in your portfolio.

An easy way to get EMD is by using keyword tools such a Google Keyword Planner. However, a valuable EMD is one that has a lot of monthly search volume, high CPC (cost per click) and competition in mostly high-paying niches such as insurance, finance, technology, etc.

What if you own BabyShower.com? I can bet you that manufacturers and entrepreneurs will beat a path to your doorstep to buy it from you. The type-in traffic factor and search engine optimization (SEO) benefits of an exact match domain (EMD) make it highly valuable to entrepreneurs and investors alike. You can play around with keyword research tools to find valuable EMDs that are available to register or make use of ExpiredDomains.net to get some expired domains to buy at mere registration cost.

Geo + Keyword Domains

These are geographically oriented domain names. A dentist in New York can buy NewYorkDentist.com from you if you own it without batting an eyelid. Keywords related to services or products are highly marketable when combined with geographic locations.

As is always the case, expensive niches or services will command more money than the others when you’re selling domains associated with geographic locations.

Keyword + Descriptive Prefix or Suffix

As a domain investor, there are good keywords or phrases worth investing in at any day or time. It could be trending keywords or emerging technology. Let’s say you cannot afford to buy Business.com as a domain name to sell later. You can append a suffix like “hub” to the “business” keyword and then come up with BusinessHub.com to sell.

Some years back, I registered PassiveIncomeHub.com and sold it for quick cash of $260 as I could not lay my hands on PassiveIncome.com. All I did was to add the suffix “hub” to “passive income” keyword and I received an inbound offer to sell it.

In this case, you’ve to keep a file of common and valuable prefixes, suffixes or stop words which you can append to good keywords such as hub, joy, pro, center, base, etc.

How to Identify Valuable Domain Name

The characteristics of a good domain name make it valuable when it comes to selling. The more characteristics a domain name has, the merrier and valuable it is.  As a domain flipper, you’ve to intuitively consider and evaluate all these factors in a domain when thinking of investing in a name to sell for profit.

Some of these characteristics include age of domain, quality backlinks, length of domain, brandable, target keyword, commercial viability, memorable, free from trademark infringement, easy to spell, easy to pronounce, easy to remember, not hyphenated, passes radio test, distinctive, etc.

With experience and practice, you’ll be able to stack these qualities together when evaluating a domain name to buy before investing in it in a jiffy. For you to be on a speed lane, develop the habit of regularly checking out domains sold reports published online at NameBio.com, DNJournal.com/domainsales.htm, Domaining.com, etc.

How to Buy Low and Sell High

The first step to quickly sell your domain is to buy something that will appeal to a lot of prospects and leads in terms of brand value it projects, SEO benefits, keyword targeted, etc. You can hand register a domain name for $10, buy from closeouts for about $20, bid at auctions with less competitive bids or research and contact individual domain owners especially undeveloped domains.

You can then list your domains for sale in premium marketplaces like Dan.com, Afternic.com, Atom.com, Sedo.com, just to name a few. Sooner or later, we’ll be releasing complete domain flipping guide to help aspiring entrepreneurs to make money with domain names. You can bookmark this page for the link.

Places to Sell Domain Names

The best marketplaces to sell your domain are secondary markets where your domains for sale will receive wider exposure. You can check out places like Afternic.com, Atom.com, Sedo.com, Dan.com, Daaz.com, etc.

How to Optimize Your Blog

You can read my previous blog posts on how to start a blog and make money part one and part two. In today’s guide, I’ll focus on WordPress blog customization and optimization.

First, you’ve to start off by logging into your WordPress dashboard and tweak 2 or more settings in your account.

Go to the domain URL you registered and log in. in the example below, you've to replace "YourDomainName" with the actual domain name you bought and the "TLD" with the extension or top level domain i.e. .com, .net, .org, .xyz, .co, etc.

http://YourDomainName.TLD/wp-admin

For example, I'll replace YourDomainName.TLD with my actual domain followed by its extension e.g.

https://hustlevim.com/wp-admin

This will take you to your WordPress (WP) blog account dashboard which is basically the backend of your blog website. You’ll be working from this environment a lot. So, you’ve to take note of a lot of details as we go along and optimize your blog.

After you’ve successfully signed in, the first task is to change and update your password if it was auto-generated when you installed WP on your domain name except you manually imputed the password yourself.

For you to do this, take a look at the left hand side of your dashboard and locate “Users” icon as shown in the image below.

Click on the “Users” icon in order to see its sub menu. Now, click on “Profile” sub menu and scroll to the bottom of the web page where there is “Account Management.”

While you're there, click on “Generate Password” and overwrite the auto-generated password with the password you can easily remember. After you’ve done that, simply click on the “Hide” button immediately beside it and click on the “Update Profile” button.

You may be logged out after you’ve effected this password change. If this is the case, you should log in again with your new password. But remember to keep your new password safe!

The next step is to go to your “Settings” menu and click on it.

The first item on the sub menu is the “General” settings. Click on it and update the “Site Title” and “Tagline.” Essentially, your website title should include your primary keyword while the tagline should include your secondary keyword.

For example, success in life blog, it may be:

Site Title: Success in Life Blog (primary keyword: success in life)

Tagline: Personal Development (secondary keyword: personal development)

Your primary keyword is the target keyword phrase which you want your blog to be ranked and known for while your secondary keyword is the second best keyword that you are also pursuing to rank for concurrently.

You should and must take the time to settle for keyword with low to medium difficulty based on your research.

My rule of the thumb is to target a minimum monthly average search volume of one thousand for my primary keyword and secondary keyword respectively.

After updating your site title and tagline, go to the bottom of the page to save your changes.

Depending on your choice as a blogger, you may prefer your blog website URL to look like either of the two options below:

 •    https://hustlevim.com, or

    https://www.hustlevim.com

If you prefer the former, you don’t have to do anything because that is how WordPress comes by default. But if you prefer the latter, you’ve to go to the section on your general settings tab immediately below the tagline and simply add the “www” to “WordPress Address (URL)” and “Site Address (URL)” without the quotes and save your changes.

Always remember to save your changes after making an update. Again, you may be logged out after you’ve done this. Log in back and continue with your customization and optimization tasks.

The third step is to click on the “Reading” settings as shown in the screenshot below. What I usually do is to edit some items here from the default setting to my own preference.

The default setting is like this:

But my blogs reading setting is usually like this:

I will reduce the number of blog posts to show on my home page to 5 while the syndication feeds to 5 and “Summary” for each post in a feed.

I don’t want any of my blog readers or followers to read my blog post in full from his or her feed outside of my blog. If it is set to “Summary,” he has to visit my blog to read the whole blog post. This will boost website traffic in the long run.

The fourth step is the “Permalinks” settings. This is where you’ve to optimize your blog the way you want every post or page URL to be indexed and displayed. You’ll see some blog URLs with day, month and year while some will use keyword in the title.

For blog SEO purpose, it is advisable to set your permalink to custom settings by making use of keyword URL.

To do this, click on “Permalinks” and make sure the radio button beside “Custom structure” is checked. After you’ve done that, simply type the code below and paste it in the field beside “Custom structure.”

/%postname%/

And you should have a permalinks custom structure like this.

This will overwrite the default permalinks after you’ve saved your changes.

The fifth step is to go to “Discussion” settings and locate the section that says, “Comment must be manually approved” and tick the check box there and adjust the “Comment moderation” to “1 or more links.”

You’ll now have something similar to this:

This will make sure bloggers or spammers don’t invade your blog with spam comments and links that will dilute the power of your blog in search engines. Every time a blogger includes a link in the comment section, you’ve to moderate and approve it before it can go live.

It will give you modicum of sanity in your blogging career.

This is how to optimize your blog on a very basic level. You can use this to start a blog and make money. However, there are other tasks you’ve to complete in respect of search engine optimization (SEO).

This includes:

  • Meta description for your blog using WordPress SEO plugin like Yoast.
  • Making use of category and tags.
  • Doing internal linking.
  • Using H1, H2 and H3 tags where necessary in headings and sub headings.
  • Including “Alt text” in your uploaded images.
  • Using responsive WordPress themes
  • Mobile optimization
  • Etc.

As I progress with this side hustle website, I’ll explain some of these SEO topics one by one.

How to Start a Blog and Make Money Blogging Online –Part 2

how to start a blog and make money
In part one of how to create a blog and make money, I outlined steps to build a blog and also explained blogging basics which I usually follow when starting a blog. I’m starting off today’s blog article with the discussion of methods and strategies to find affiliate products and services to promote and sell on your website without breaking a sweat.

But before I dive into the details, you’ve to understand that writing and publishing high quality content consistently is the foundation of building a successful blog. People want to learn from experts and you’ve to strive to be one of them in your intended niche market on a consistent basis and not by fits and starts.

This is why you’ve to be an avid reader in your industry in order to be abreast of news and information of your target market. Being the “first to know” is the first criteria of becoming a successful blogger people want to listen to and follow.

With that said, let’s dive in!

Step #3: How to Find Affiliate Products to Promote and Sell

If you really want to make money online for the long haul, creating a blog that provides value in the marketplace is what will matter to you as a blogger in the first place. But if you don’t have your own digital product or service to sell immediately or digital skills to provide and get paid from your blog website, the next best option is to promote affiliate products and earn affiliate commissions when you close sales for vendors.

So, I can confidently say that affiliate marketing business is one of the best ways to monetize your blog as a beginner and earn money online without breaking a sweat.

Now, how do you get affiliate products or services to promote and sell on your own website?

The first step is to sign up with reputable affiliate networks which are related to your industry or niche market.  You can then browse through their marketplaces and use keyword and/or other search parameters via the search function to find specific affiliate products to sign up for.

Some of these reliable affiliate network programs are Impact.com, Amazon.com, CJ.com, Clickbank.com, MarketHealth.com, JVZoo.com, etc.

The second option is to use Google.com or any other search engine of your choice to research affiliate programs to promote. You can use your “niche keyword” plus “affiliate programs” to find the product you can promote and sell. You can see an example of how to use keyword to find affiliate products using Google.com from the image below.

You can use different keywords to replace the word “affiliate” if you are not getting the required results e.g. associate, referral, etc.

Thirdly, you can reach out to a merchant, vendor or product creator who has no affiliate program in place on a personal level to discuss how he can create one if possible for you to sign up with. Some merchants don’t know the benefits of having affiliate program until you enlighten them about it.

Fourthly, you can follow successful bloggers in your niche market to see what type of affiliate products they promote. Heavyweight bloggers who own sundry digital products on sale still join good affiliate programs that complement their products and services and promote them to earn affiliate commissions.

You can sign up for their email newsletters and track links to products, services, software, apps, etc, which they are promoting and are affiliate links. You can then find ways to join the same affiliate network programs if possible. This is the best way to find high-paying affiliate programs to join as quickly as possible and make money on the internet.

Step #4: Conduct Keyword Research

At this level, you should tentatively have 2 to 3 complementary affiliate products you can promote even if you’ve not signed up with them yet. Your task now is to research and find profitable long tail keyword phrases to target when you write blog posts or optimize your blog for SEO (search engine optimization).

You should not forget that majority of online shoppers make use of search engines like Google.com to research information about anything before they take the decision to buy. So, if you’re able to discover these search queries which they type into search engines and write SEO articles about them, you’ll hopefully rank on the SERP (search engine results page) for increased free targeted traffic.

There are keyword research tools to quickly use to perform this task and there are free and paid keyword tools on the World Wide Web. Google Keyword Planner tool is free to use but you won’t be able to know keyword difficulty of each of the search terms. Ahrefs.com and Semrush.com are paid keyword research tools which you can use to determine if a keyword is profitable or difficult to pursue or not.

Another way you can discover keywords to write about is to go to questions and answers sites like Quora.com and go through questions people in your target niche are asking. You’ll also find answers from experts to these questions to learn from. The interesting thing here is that you’ll discover key word variants which different people type to ask questions and find specific information.

As always the case, keyword variations are usually location based because people are familiar and use different search queries. In some climes, web surfers may use “associate” while in another clime, they will use “affiliate.”

Yet, another method to find different keywords to work with is to go to AnswerThePublic.com and type your search query there in the search field and hit the return button. You’ll discover different types of questions people are asking which are related to your topic from the returned results.

Step #5: Get a Domain Name and Web Hosting

This step is the simplest of them all. What you’ve to do here is to register a domain name and get web hosting from reliable company so that you can create a blog for free. You’re going to use self-hosted WordPress to build a website. WordPress.org is built as CMS (content management system) software which makes it easy for blogger like you and I to create a blog website without knowing anything about coding, HTML or CSS.

You can sign up with HostGator web hosting because they support WordPress hosting which makes blog installation a breeze. In addition, they have excellent customer support in case you are stuck with about installing your blog on a domain name. HostGator provides unlimited disk space and bandwidth for your web hosting services in case you’ve enough files or data and avalanche of website visitors to handle.

If you’re concerned with your website security in this age of hacking, malware, etc, you should consider getting reliable website hosting that is cheap and experienced in the business at the same time.

Step #6: Install WordPress on Your Domain Name

Everything is now set to go if you’re able to purchase web hosting from HostGator or any other website hosting company that supports WordPress hosting. You can use the Softaculous app to install WordPress on your domain name by following their on-screen instructions and prompts.

If you’ve successfully installed your blog, you’ll receive a message to that effect. There is no problem if you’re not installed WordPress before or you’re not confident that you can install WordPress on your domain name. I’ve written a mini blogging guide to teach you how to install WordPress blog using Softaculous app for free. Click here to download the ebook and use it to complete the task in a minute.

In my next blogging tutorial, I’ll teach you how to optimize your blog for maximum impact when you want to rank for money keywords on the SERP. How to Start a Blog and Make Money Blogging Online

how to start a blog and make money

If you ask me, I’ll tell you that blogging is one of the best ways to start a side hustle business, build wealth from the web and achieve financial freedom goals in record time. And all it takes to start a blog and make money is for you to register a domain name and get web hosting.

And the best part is that you don’t have to be tech savvy to create a blog website in any niche market of your choice if you make use of CMS (content management system) software like WordPress.org. The icing on the cake is that with less than $100 business startup costs, you can build your own business from the ground up.

So, in this blogging guide on how to start a blog and make money blogging online, you’ll discover that starting an online business is easier than you think. Few months ago, I started this side hustle blog as a case study to teach my digital marketing coaching students how to get started on the cheap.

My main business goal with this side business blog is to create a blog and make money investing only $10 to register a domain name and then use the free hosting service from Blogger.com to keep it visible on the World Wide Web. I decided to buy custom domain name for this side project for ease of branding instead of making use of the long sub domain from Blogspot.com.

But let me make it abundantly clear that blogging using free website hosting is not the best way to make money online for the long term. With less than $100 to sign up for paid web hosting services  from HostGator for a whole year, you can build a blog website and grow it into a full-fledged online business even if you’re doing it on the side in a matter of months.

HostGator web hosting
I’ll gladly recommend HostGator website hosting company for you to sign up with because I use them and I’m fully satisfied with their web hosting services. You can click here now to get web hosting from HostGator on the cheap along with an offer for a free domain name registration.

I want you to know that it’s not rocket science to start a blog and make money and anybody can do it. So, if you’re searching for information on how to make money online with little investment, you can make use of this business model which I’ll discuss here for you to get started in earnest.

Obviously, there are three ways to create a blog on the internet:

  1. Using the totally free method by making use of free blogging platforms like Blogger.com, WordPress.com, Wix.com, etc,
  2. Using the partially-free option by buying a domain name of your own and mapping it to a free hosting site like Blogger which will allow you to use a custom domain to be configured to their free hosting services, and
  3. Getting paid hosting option like HostGator website hosting services which supports WordPress hosting and use it to start an online business and work from home or anywhere in the world.

In this blueprint, I’ll teach you how to start a blog and make money using method (3) above if you want to maximize your ROI (return on investment). But if you cannot invest about $100 to start your own business online right away, you can read my comprehensive blog post on how to start a blog with Blogger by making use of their free hosting services.

First and foremost, I want you to know that blogging for money is not a get rich quick scheme. It requires hard work, smart work, consistency, focus and determination to make your business blog to become profitable. And you cannot do this in a twinkle of an eye.

Secondly, you’ve to understand SEO (search engine optimization), keyword research, content marketing, social media networking, etc, inside out in order to maximize your efforts, time, energy and money invested in building a profitable blog.

Just to mention it so that you know what makes a successful blog; there are three pillars that make blogging effective, namely: content, audience and the connection. Your first step to become a successful blogger is to create high quality content on a regular basis to attract your target audience and build your brand and relationship with your readers.

The second step is to know and connect with your audience. Understanding your ideal reader, prospect, lead or customer is critical to your success. Also, you want to build affinity with your target audience so that it becomes easy for you to sell to them from time to time.

You’ve to understand that blogging is very profitable because it can be used to increase targeted traffic to your blog website through search engines and entrench visitors’ engagement. In other words, a blog is an amazing tool to start your own business and make passive income online.

Be that as it may, let’s get started!

Without going into the history of blog evolution, I’ll outline the basic steps to start a blog and make money.

  1. Choose a blog topic to write about.
  2. Research the market for viability of your topic.
  3. Find and confirm if there are existing affiliate products and services already selling in the marketplace.
  4. Conduct keyword research.
  5. Get a domain name and web hosting.
  6. Install WordPress blog on your domain.
  7. Optimize your blog.
  8. Set up data analytics.
  9. Regularly publish content on your blog.
  10. Monetize your blog.
  11. Promote your blog.
  12. Build backlinks to your blog.
  13. Measure, analyze and improve on your metrics.

I’ll go through each of the above blog creation steps to explain what it really takes to create a blog and make money blogging online.

Step #1: Choose a Blog Topic to Write About

The first task in creating a blog is to choose a topic to write about. You’ve to take the time to do this because it will make or mar your overall blogging efforts from the foundation. The reason is quite obvious.

Choosing a wrong topic means your interest will wane over time and your blog will become inactive as you may derelict or be overwhelmed in publishing content regularly. The blog topic you should go for is a subject you know a lot about or you’re good at, passionate about or have keen interest in learning it. It will keep you keyed up in the life of your blog even if you’ve not started making money from your blog.

You can look at a broad market and from there niche down to select a topic with relatively wide coverage. You can take a look at the example below so that you’ll understand how to choose a niche blog topic.

Health >> Weight loss >> Diet for weight loss >> Paleo or Primal diet for weight loss

As you can see from the simple diagram above, the broad market is health. The next narrower market is weight loss. Now, as a blogger, I may want to focus on specific diets for losing weight. And I’m not done yet. I want to laser target primal or paleo diet for weight loss. So, my weight loss blog will start of by creating content around natural foods or paleo diets.

Side note: While picking a specific niche topic is a good start to build a blog, you should register a domain name with a broad meaning so that you can easily expand and grow your blog without limitations in scope. Instead of buying a domain that includes the keyword of primal or paleo, you’ll get a domain that has “health” or “weight loss” in it.

As your business blog grows, you can discuss topics on exercises, fitness, wellness, and so on because the domain name you registered is not restrictive.

There are various topics or broad markets to evaluate including:

  • Jobs and employment
  • Computer and internet
  • Travel and tour
  • Make money online
  • Work from home business
  • Etc

Don’t forget that you’re tentatively picking this topic for further scrutiny. In step two of this blogging guide, you’ve to conduct market viability to vet the profitability of your blog topic. If it fails the test, you simply revert to step one to pick another blog topic to evaluate.

Step $2: Research the Market for Viability of Your Topic

The truth is this. You may know a lot about a topic to start your blog but it will not be profitable for you to invest money, quality time and energy to pursue it because the people you wish to target are not willing and able to spend money in that niche.

Your focus audience may just be teenagers or youth looking for free downloads on the internet or anything similar. But your goal is essentially to continually create valuable content for your blog readers which you can monetize to make money online.

The simplest and best way to conduct market research is to look out for problems, pain points or challenges of people you hope to serve. You can do this by actively participating in niche forums and online communities related to your subject.

Or you can build an email list of subscribers and conduct survey or send questionnaires to your list members for first hand information about what their pain points are and/or their preferred solutions to address them.

You can also make use of questions and answers sites like Quora.com to complete this task. People go to Q&A sites to ask questions about what they want to learn, seek solution or answer to their pain points or the best way to achieve a goal. By making use of the search function on this website will unearth a lot of information to work with.

A simple keyword research will show different queries which will reveal search intent of each keyword by close scrutiny. Obviously, there are markets you don’t need any research to confirm their viability but they can be competitive. In such markets, you’ve to look out for soft landing spot to start from.

If the market has been adjudged profitable by you, your next step is to find affiliate products and services to monetize your blog with since this is going to be our primary blog monetization strategy.

I can assure you that on this topic on how to start a blog and make money blogging online, I’ll not leave any stone unturned. You can bookmark this blog because I’m going to publish all the steps in parts for easy assimilation so that you don’t get overwhelmed.
